Salt Alternatives – Use spices
Herbs and spices help us to use less salt and have been shown to possess health benefits of their own. Eating too much salt is really bad for you. Here’s a good article explaining why. Instead of salt, think about curry and cumin, chili and paprika, lemon and parsley. Those spices mixed together give enough flavor that you don’t really need salt. As a salt alternative for Indian food, your best bet is to us curry powder or tandoori powder in combination with additional cumin, garlic and ginger. Towards the end of cooking your dish add some lemon to tang it up without the need for salt. If you want to give it a more North Indian and Middle Eastern twist combine some parsley with lemon in addition to your spices.
If you are cooking Indian dishes with citrus you can keep the salt out. Lemon juice, lime juice or even a splash of vinegar can easily do the trick. Remember, the sour flavor is similar to salty. You’re less likely to miss the salt with a squeeze of lemon and a combination of good spices.
Foods’ natural flavors are really good when they get to shine all by themselves and not be covered up by salt. There isn’t a good salt substitute so don’t waste your money trying to find one. It isn’t out there. Instead enhance your food with spice, citrus and eating vegetarian.
